Xiao Zhengli, Marquis of Luoping, inquired: "I do not yet know: is conventional truth an arising dharma or not?"
The imperial decree answered: "The essence of conventional truth is precisely arising dharmas."
[Xiao Zhengli] also inquired: "Since the conventional is perverse seeing, how can there be arising?"
The imperial decree answered: "Perversely seeing it as existent, there is therefore arising."
[Xiao Zhengli] also inquired: "Perversely seeing it as existent, in reality there is of itself no dharma. Since in reality there is no dharma, what is said to arise?"
The imperial decree answered: "Precisely these arising dharmas are called perverse seeing; and precisely this perverse seeing is called arising dharmas."
[Xiao Zhengli] also inquired: "If it is perverse seeing, there should not be arising. If there must be arising, why is it named perverse seeing?"
The imperial decree answered: "Since it is called perverse seeing, in reality there is of itself no arising. It is only that perverse seeing takes it as existent, and there is this perverse arising."
