From the Chancellery: Relying on the profound and returning to the wondrous truly requires the authentic teaching; tasting wisdom and practicing benevolence are genuinely centered on fruitional wisdom. Thus, restraint during the three summer months is an enduring rule of the Way; instruction during the nine periods of summer is an excellent model of the Dharma. Let orders be sent to all provinces that for the pure assemblies in this summer retreat, large provinces shall have three hundred persons, medium provinces two hundred, and small provinces one hundred. Allow them to lecture and expound in several places, all supplied with Saṃgha Grain. If the grain is scarce and the disciples few so that this number cannot be met, let the Office of Rectifying the Profound (Zhaoxuan) reduce the quota accordingly and report back. Let each province respect and honor the worthy masters and truly recommend those of sagacious virtue, so as not to admit the impure and encourage indolence among these juniors.
