From beginningless time onward, my nose faculty, due to causes and conditions: if it smelled the wondrous fragrance of the orthodox teachings and the virtue of the precepts, it initially had no delight in smelling it, but instead gave rise to obstacles; smelling the fragrances of evil desires and heterodox seductions, it deeply indulged in them. Due to this karma, I fell into the great hells or was born in peripheral lands, never smelling the fragrance of the sages' and worthies' fivefold [Dharmakāya], nor smelling the fragrance of the three vehicles and the four means of embracing. Causing me to transmigrate and constantly be separated from goodness—this is the third great shame.
