陛下。巍巍堂堂眾聖中王。如星中之月。言多不載。次述釋宗。後以二難雙徵兩教。先問道云。先生廣位道宗高邁宇宙。向釋道德云。上卷明道。下卷明德。未知此道更有大此道者。為更無大於道者。

'Your Majesty is towering and majestic, a king among all sages, like the moon among the stars.'—His words were numerous and are not recorded here.—Next he expounded the Buddhist lineage. Afterward, with two difficult questions, he cross-examined both teachings simultaneously. First he questioned the Daoists, saying: 'Gentlemen, you have expounded the Daoist lineage as exalted above the cosmos, and just now you explained the *Daodejing*, saying that the upper fascicle clarifies the Dao while the lower fascicle clarifies the De. We do not know: is there anything greater than this Dao, or is there nothing greater than the Dao?'
