Upon examining this four-fascicle work: in its fourth fascicle, the National Edition and the Song Edition are identical, being merely eight sheets. The Dan Edition, however, is much longer, reaching thirty-four sheets; not only is the quantity different, but the texts and meanings do not correspond. Furthermore, in the preceding third fascicle, while the National Edition and the Song Edition are identical, why is the Dan Edition entirely different from beginning to end? Now, after back-and-forth investigation and collation, [it is found that] the Song Edition became confused and lost the third fascicle, mistakenly citing the fourth fascicle as the third fascicle; and in the fourth fascicle, it drew from texts of the Daoist priest Guo Xingzhen abandoning Daoism and taking refuge in Buddhism—over ten passages spanning eight sheets—to patch together a fascicle. The National Edition followed the Song Edition and was thus erroneously the same. Now, examining the compiling framework of this entire work, it begins with Emperor Ming of the Han and ends with Emperor Gaozong of the Tang, chronologically recording the debates between Buddhism and Daoism through the imperial eras. The third fascicle of the National and Song editions contains seven items, which are events from the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang. The ten items written continuously after the eight sheets of the present fourth fascicle are events from the reigns of Gaozu and Taizong. Thus, having the sequence reversed cannot possibly be correct; in principle, it must be rectified. Now, following the Dan Edition, the ten items from the reigns of Gaozu and Taizong are made the third fascicle, and the seven items from the reign of Gaozong are made the fourth fascicle, thereby rectifying it. The texts of Guo Xingzhen abandoning Daoism and taking refuge in Buddhism are appended together at the end. Recorded by Shou.
