In the first year of Yonghui, there was a man named Wang Yanzi who was famous for plunder. At night he climbed onto the ringed spire to take the Boshan censer. As he was about to descend to the bottom tier, two pillars suddenly clamped him between them. Seeking to get out, he could not, and gradually fell into dire distress. He saw an Indian monk who said, "You should shout loudly, 'Thief!' Otherwise you will die." He at once shouted several times. The monks of the temple heard him and came to his rescue, whereupon he was finally able to be pulled out. At the beginning of the Zhenguan era, there was a great earthquake. This stūpa rocked back and forth and was on the verge of collapsing. At that time, countless people came from outside the city walls and suddenly saw four spirits, in size like the stūpa, each bracing their backs against the four sides of the stūpa; now leaning this way, now tilting that, in the end it was spared from collapsing. There was a man of extreme wealth and extravagance with many properties who saw that the previous dew basin had always been short and small, not matching the proportions of the stūpa. He thereupon donated three hundred ounces of gold and, together with various faithful believers, remade the dew basin. When it was completed and brought down, upon reaching the overturned basin, a fragrant vapor billowed forth like surging clouds, spreading fragrance through the city, which subsided only after ten days.
