In the fourth year of the Chiwu era of Sun Quan of Wu, the śramaṇa Kang Senghui first arrived in the region south of the Yangtze, setting up images and practicing the Way. The people of Wu regarded it as uncanny and reported the situation to Sun Quan. Sun Quan summoned Senghui and asked, "What numinous power does the Buddha possess?" Senghui said, "The Buddha has concealed his numinous traces, yet his remaining bones and śarīra respond and manifest without limit." Quan said, "Where are they?" Senghui said, "Divine traces resonate through sympathy; if sought with prayers, they may be obtained." Quan said, "If you obtain śarīra, I will erect a temple for them." After three times seven days, they were finally obtained within a bottle. In the morning he presented them to Quan, their light illuminating the palace halls. Quan took the bottle and poured them onto a bronze plate; as the śarīra fell, the plate shattered immediately. Quan was greatly astonished and sighed at the rare auspicious sign. Senghui stepped forward and said, "The numinous bones of the Buddha are like vajra, unbreakable, and the kalpa fire cannot scorch them." Quan then ordered strong men to strike them; the hammer and anvil both dented, yet the śarīra was undamaged, its radiance shooting out in all four directions, dazzling men's eyes. They also burned it with fire, whereupon it surged with light, leaping up into a great lotus. Quan gave rise to great faith, and consequently established Jianchu Temple for it, renaming the place where he dwelt "Buddha Village".
