At Xianquan Temple on Mount Nangu in Jiang Prefecture, Dhyāna Master Sengche once, while traveling, encountered a leper living in a cave. Che brought him into the mountains, carved out a cave for him, and supplied him with food, instructing him to recite the Lotus Sūtra. He was illiterate by nature and moreover dull-witted and coarse; [Che] taught him phrase by phrase, never growing weary. When he was nearly halfway through reciting the sūtra, he dreamed of someone instructing him, and thereafter he grew somewhat cleverer. When he mastered five or six scrolls, he felt his sores gradually healing; once the entire work was completed, his beard and eyebrows grew back completely, and his skin color returned to normal. Thus the sūtra says: 'A fine medicine for illness'—this was truly verified.
