9. The wooden image of Lingbao Temple in Shanyin, Kuaiji, from the Eastern Jin, was crafted by the recluse Dai Kui of the state of Qiao. Because anciently made images were generally simple and rustic, and as far as inspiring reverence was concerned, they were insufficient to stir the heart, Kui, who had always possessed pure faith and was also exceedingly ingenious, set about altering and carving the awe-inspiring visage, hoping to match the ultimate reality. Concentrating his thoughts for many years, he was finally able to accomplish it. In the excellence of image-making in the Eastern Land, there had never been an image like this. It caused monastics and laypeople who gazed upon it with reverence to feel suddenly as if they were meeting [the Buddha] in person. Xi Jiabin of Gaoping took up incense and prayed, saying, 'If [things] are permanent, may I behold the holy countenance again; if they are impermanent, may I meet before Maitreya!' The incense he held in his hand spontaneously sent up fragrant smoke, rising straight to the limits of vision at the edge of the clouds. The lingering fragrance hovered, scent filling the entire monastery. At that time, monastics and laypeople were all inspired and stirred. The image is now at Jiaxiang Temple in Yuezhou.
