The Dowager Lady of the Duke of Chen, née Doulu, had faith in blessings and recited the Diamond Prajñā; one sheet remained unread. Later, at dusk, she had a headache and felt uneasy in all four limbs. Thinking to herself, 'If I die, will the sūtra remain unfinished?', she immediately got up and forced herself to recite, but the lamp had already gone out. She ordered a maid to light a candle, but fire was nowhere to be found in either the kitchen or the outer courtyard. The Lady was deeply distressed. Suddenly she saw a burning candle in the courtyard ascend the steps and enter the hall, stopping about three feet before the couch; no one was holding it, yet its radiance was like daylight. Surprised and delighted, the Lady's ailments were also cured. She took the sūtra and recited it. After a while, her family members obtained fire using a fire-drill and entered the hall carrying a lit lamp, whereupon the candle flame in the hall was immediately extinguished. She finished her recitation that night, and from then on made it her regular practice to recite it five times a day, and so forth.
