"Furthermore, the rule of the sitting mat was originally to protect the body, robes, and the Saṃgha's bedding. In it, interior and exterior are both pure, unlike the monks of this land. Therefore, in the sūtras, after begging for food they return to their original place, put away robes and bowls, and only then wash their feet and sit. As for leather sandals, wiping, scraping, netting, and binding them are treated like washing face and hands. Thus body and robes are both pure; there are none that are impure. As for the multitude of monks in this land, how can the foul stench of their bodies even be spoken of? When evacuating to the left and right, they never wash or cleanse; when do they ever launder their inner and outer garments? They rarely possess the three robes, but trousers and undergarments are especially abundant. When people see them, they still feel revulsion; smelling their stench while hearing about righteousness, one should grieve at their forbearance. According to these established texts, now seeing the reality of it on the shoulder, it should only be tucked inside the arm. If there is a śramaṇa who abides by the Dharma and does not practice evil habits, being pure both inside and out, with an appearance and vestments worth beholding, how could he turn his back on the Buddha's sincere words and not comply with the rule of the left shoulder? Therefore, regarding the hooks and loops of the three robes in the Shisong, Vinaya, etc.: four fingers away from the edge in front a hook is placed; eight fingers behind a loop is placed. With the right corner tossed over the left shoulder, the loop is fastened to the front hook. Nowadays, this is completely reversed. How could this be what the textual teachings permit? It is only through the thoughts and perceptions of ordinary monks relying on and conforming to the true teaching, as well as encountering conditions contrary and erroneous as mentioned above. You have graciously bestowed admonitions and instructions." The various non-humans were all silent.
