1.39

又曰。若爾傳虛。何為河東寺上有驢。峴山南有中驢村。據此行由。則乘驢之有地也。答曰非也。後人築臺於上植樹供養。焉有佛殿之側頓置驢耶。又中驢之名本是閭國郡國之故地也。後人不練。遂妄擬之云云。

I also said: "If the tradition is false, why is there [an image of] a donkey atop Hedong Temple, and why is there a 'Middle Donkey Village' south of Mount Xian? Based on these origins of his travels, the riding of the donkey has its grounds." He answered: "It is not so. Later people built a terrace there and planted trees for offerings; how could a donkey be set up beside a Buddha hall? Moreover, the name 'Zhonglü' (Middle Donkey) originally was the old territory of the Lü commandery or realm. Later people were unversed [in history] and thus made wild comparisons about it, and so forth."
