4.54

竊以。老釋之教雖曰沖玄。君父之尊終資嚴敬。況所行化不出寰中。義屬在三須遵孔禮。但為髮落不可加冠。法衣不可加帶。無冠無帶拜伏失儀。如愚管窺。依舊為允。謹議。

We venture to observe: Although the teachings of Laozi and the Śākya are called subtle and profound, the veneration of ruler and father ultimately relies on strict reverence. Moreover, the transformation they effect does not step outside the realm, and having duty belonging to the three [venerated ones], they must comply with the rites of Confucius. However, because their hair has fallen, they cannot add a cap; because of their Dharma robes, they cannot add a sash. Without cap and without sash, kneeling and prostrating violates proper form. According to our foolish view through a tube, it is appropriate to adhere to past precedent. Respectfully deliberated.
