The monk Daoxuan and others petition: We have heard that carrying on the responsibility of the Dharma must certainly fall upon the wise and clear; exalting and protecting the true doctrine truly relies on esteemed expectations. We humbly reflect that Your Ladyship has long practiced perfume and cultivation, opening boundless blessings; early on You marked faith and wisdom, establishing imperishable causes. As for the majestic deportment of the Buddha's teaching and the canonical standards of the Dharma gate, we truly hope that You will specially confer gracious protection so that they do not decline. Since the imperial decree was received, the monastic assembly has been permitted exemption from bowing at court; this truly accords with the intention of the Buddha's entrustment, and we deeply bear feelings of gratitude. However, toward parents, they are still ordered to kneel and prostrate. Personal feelings may be vainly gratified, but it severely contradicts the Buddha's teaching. If this is not reported early on, we fear it will eventually become identical to lay law. The monks look up with eager longing yet dare not lay bare their thoughts; our feelings are distraught and troubled, so we venture to submit this appeal. We humbly beg for Your compassionate sheltering, specially to report this above. If imperial favor should be granted, our blessing and joy will be all the deeper. Unable to bear our utmost earnestness, we respectfully offer this petition to report. In deeply disturbing Your presence, we only know awe and trepidation. Respectfully petitioned. Presented on the thirteenth day of the eighth month.
