The Upright Faith replies: The Shujing says: 'Seeing good, act as if you could not reach it; seeing evil, act as if testing boiling water.' Thus the highest reveres virtue, and next to it establishes words. Virtue should cause people to turn to it; words should cause people to believe. You have no virtue to shield your person, yet speak words that damage transformation, slighting and insulting the Great Sage—can you be considered human? The sages Kong and Lao themselves still praised and extolled the Three Jewels, instructing Daoists and the like to revere and defer to monks and nuns. Since you take Kong and Lao as your teachers, why do you go against your teachers' instructions and slander the Sacred Venerable? The Fuzi states: 'The teacher of Master Lao was named Śākyamuni.' The two fascicles of Master Mou's book also vigorously discuss the Buddhadharma.
