The young master was pleased and replied: "I have heard that the ocean has no different saltiness, and boiling water has no different heat. The precepts of not killing, not stealing, and so forth spoken by the benevolent one are just like the teachings of benevolence and righteousness of the former kings. In the end, they are merely different designations for eyes and gaze, alternative names for head and crown. From this, one knows that 'different paths lead to the same destination, and a hundred thoughts agree in a single result'—this is what it means! Since the five teachings are already sufficient, why trouble with the Five Precepts?"
