淨土經云。當持九齋。所謂歲三月六。九齋應九神除九惱。滅九惡愈九病。三齋出三界求三道。制三流斷三苦。治三毒塞三途應三尊。六齋制六情禁六賊。止六衰得六和。起六行成六德。

The Pure Land Sūtra states: 'One should uphold the nine fasts, which are the three of the year and the six of the month. The nine fasts correspond to the nine spirits, remove the nine afflictions, extinguish the nine evils, and cure the nine illnesses. The three fasts escape the three realms, seek the three paths, rein in the three flows, sever the three sufferings, remedy the three poisons, block the three destinies, and correspond to the Three Honored Ones. The six fasts rein in the six emotions, forbid the six thieves, halt the six declines, attain the six harmonies, give rise to the six practices, and accomplish the six virtues.'
