The Aśoka-sūtra also states: 'King Aśoka's consort had two sets of precious necklaces and a thousand pearl robes; though situated as a royal consort, she received heavenly garments and attire,' and so on. This refers to the brilliance of pearls lined behind and jade maidens arrayed in front, skirts of misty gauze rustling in the breeze, and sleeves of cloudy gauze sending forth fragrance. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: 'By upholding the precepts and observing the fasts, one visibly attains five benefits: weapons cannot injure one; poisons cannot harm one; fire cannot burn one; water cannot drown one; and among all angry, wrathful, harmful, and evil sentient beings, those who see one are joyful.' The Avadāna-sūtra states: 'Observing the fast for a single day yields provisions for sixty thousand years and attains five kinds of blessings: few illnesses, bodily peace, little lust, little sleep, and rebirth in heaven.'
