The bodhisattva instructed: "A petty person takes sides with kin; a gentleman aligns with reason. If reason conforms and affairs accord, what shame is there before the azure sky? I have heard that worldly dharmas have words without meaning, while supramundane dharmas have both words and meaning. Why so? Worldly dharmas are superficial and false, comparable to donkey's milk; supramundane dharmas are real and true, comparable to cow's milk. Yet when donkey's milk becomes curd, it cannot produce butter; even if one churns it forcefully, it simply turns back into urine. Why is this? Because its potential and capacity are exhausted. Cow's milk produces curd and butter up to ghee; the more it is churned, the purer it becomes, exclusively fragrant and delicious, endowed with the five kinds and richly sweet with the eight tastes. The sūtras spoken by the Buddha cite this as an analogy. Examining the Records of the Grand Historian, which placed Huang-Lao first and the Six Classics second, and the Book of Han, which placed the Six Classics first and Huang-Lao second: their views were different, but in principle they did not diverge. Each followed what he favored; these are not definitive treatises. Moreover, Ban Gu said: 'The Changes has sixty-four hexagrams; the Dao merely corresponds to the single hexagram of Humility. The Bibliographical Treatise comprehensively categorizes the nine streams; the Dao merely enters into one stream.' Kong Anguo said: 'What the Three Sovereigns practiced is called the Great Dao; what the Five Thearchs practiced is called the Constant Dao.' He did not say there was separately another Dao for people to venerate. Now I advise you: you must not follow your own subjective judgments, but skillfully seek the reality for yourself."
