The above were the eminent worthies of the Qi era and the outstanding figures of the Northern Dynasties. They were all learned in past and present, their comprehension penetrating both the profound and the Confucian. Deeply placing their faith in the gate of Śākya, they thoroughly understood cause and effect. With their hands they unrolled jade rollers, and with their mouths they chanted the golden words. Their multitudes were like plants and trees relying on the great earth; their being sheltered was like the scaly and shelled creatures drifting on the long rivers. As for the humble farmers in thatched huts and the nameless old men, those who had a slight aspiration and gave rise to a bit of faith cannot be fully recorded, so how could one put them all into words? Therefore, blessings and aid flowed to the four modes of birth, and good fortune spread through the three periods of existence, truly benevolent and forgiving down to their sons and grandsons. For those who can practice it, there is no virtue that cannot be attained.
