Wei, Xun, Pi, and Ta were all robust and imposing in appearance, with large ears and fine eyebrows. For forty years, during the three long fasting months and the six fasting days, they observed the fast and maintained the precepts without lapse. At that time, they chanted the Vimalakīrti Sūtra and built Fawáng Monastery. Aged and of high prestige, they would lean on their staffs to attend court. Moreover, Pi's voice was loud and clear, and he possessed an extensive memory of state affairs, knowing everything he was asked. When participating in banquets, he always sat upright. Whenever he investigated the flavors of Buddhist principles with princes, dukes, scholars, and eminent monks of great virtue, he raised his voice and declared loudly to the assembly: 'The Buddha's teaching is profound and all-encompassing; it is not something that Confucians and Mohists can understand.'
