His steadfast ability was sufficient to accomplish affairs; his harmonious righteousness was sufficient to benefit living beings. Resolute and unyielding, this was embodied in his nature. When in retirement he did not transgress filial devotion; in steadfastness he did not sever ties with the world. He was like the Eight Lords rushing to Han, and the Four White-Headed Elders entering the court. The state's governance and Heaven's net thereby became fully complete. Quite conversant with the hundred masters, he was also versed in the three mysteries. He relaxed his mind in the arena of the four virtues, and entrusted his being to contemplation of the five gates. He copied sūtras and made images; he bowed to the Buddha and lit lamps. He completed those alaṃkāras and gathered all merits. Among the fine ministers of the Sui dynasty, this man was truly the one. Yet his mind was humble while his aspiration was lofty; he discerned what was subtle and saw what was distant. He modeled himself after the civil and martial, and earnestly maintained the constant moral principles.
