Inheriting the title of full marquis through generations, his family handed down imperial favors. His capacity was harmonious and fair; his discernment and prudence were noble and far-reaching. In martial skills he surpassed Sun and Wu; in literary arts he stood higher than Ban and Ma. His strategies while awaiting imperial summons were repeatedly made manifest; the beauty of his responses grew more splendid daily. He was truly the plumage and ornament of the court, the pillar and beam of the imperial house. Revering the Three Jewels, he had thorough realization of the four thoroughfares. He built monasteries, made offerings to monks, copied sūtras, and cast images. Benevolent, kind, and generous, his acts of giving (dāna) never altered.
