In principles he integrated the Six Classics; in history he encompassed the hundred schools. His dress, demeanor, and deportment were praised throughout court and country; his lofty discourses and untrammeled style uniquely surpassed his contemporaries. When he was sent on an embassy at twenty years of age, Emperor Wu of the Liang marveled at him and conversed with him all day. Emperor Wu said to him: “In the past, Wang Ling served in Han, and Jiang Wei was minister to Shu; wherever they were, they made their name. Why must it be in one’s native land?” Such was the respect shown to him. Whenever he presented a memorial to Emperor Wu of the Liang, he would always write, “Prince Song of Linhuai of the Wei.” Emperor Wu did not reproach him either, taking it as a sign of mutual respect. On the six fast days he would constantly set out pure offerings to present to the Buddha and feed the monks. Most of the income from his official stipend went into sūtras and images.
