Zai was originally a man of Wu. He served as Aide to the General-in-Chief of Expeditionary Forces, Prince Yizhen of Xianyang under the Song. Later he fell into the hands of the Helian clan, and thereupon went on to serve the Wei. He had talent and wit and was good at jesting conversation, being deeply praised and respected by the noble lords of the Wei court. Yet by nature he loved detachment and tranquility, and constantly kept his mind on the Buddha's Dharma. Whenever he read the various sūtras, he would extol their profound meaning. In his later years his devotion was consummate: the characters of the sūtras emitted light, and as he chanted the Lotus Sūtra with his mouth, śarīras were at times evoked.
