The Note states: The *Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna Sūtra* says: 'For example, like a bat: when people catch birds, it enters a hole as a rat; when people catch rats, it leaves the hole as a bird.' Today's [Daoist] Libationers are precisely like this. Keeping wives and children, they claim to possess loving-kindness; diligently plowing and sowing, they claim not to harm hair and skin; yet when royal labor and taxes are levied, they claim to have left the household. This is also just like the bat going in and out.
