The external treatise says: Filial piety is the root of virtue and the foremost among human relations. The greatest lineage depends strictly upon father and mother. How could one ever repay the grace of Vast Heaven? Therefore, while they live, one exhausts the reverence of keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer; when they pass away, one provides fully the rites of tombs and mounds. Now the Buddha's bequeathed instruction requires people to abandon their skeletal remains and cast them into the grassy wilderness, while expending much wealth and goods to build our stūpas and temples. Thus foolish men are confused and led astray, abandoning these canonical rites; for the coffins and caskets of their deceased fathers and mothers, they have no intention of mounding tombs or planting trees.
