The Sūtra of King Aśoka states: 'The king killed eighty-four thousand palace attendants. Hearing wailing outside the palace at night, the king repented and erected eighty-four thousand stūpas for them.' Some of these are located here in Cīnasthāna (China) as well. Śakra Devānām-Indra built three thousand stūpas in heaven. Emptying the immense sea to seek a pearl, or clearing a wide highway by moving stones—these are instances of exerting physical labor. Taking responsibility for all sentient beings as one's own duty, regarding all breath-possessing creatures as one's kindred, rushing anxiously across this defiled realm, and bearing the burdens of the unruly multitude—these are instances of exerting mental labor. Turning the carriage toward the realm of the true mark, focusing the spirit in the field of serene illumination, pointing toward nirvāṇa to return eternally, and mounting the dharmakāya to gaze far and wide—this is the way of inexhaustibility. When [the Buddha's] mother descended from heaven, he opened the golden coffin to expound his stanzas; when his royal father passed away, he held the jeweled bier to see him off to his end.
