The commentary says: As for your regarding the prohibition of having wives as a crime, your Abode of Assembled Sages at the Mysterious Capital remains a bridal chamber, and your highest virtue of purity and emptiness becomes a hall for sharing matrimonial sacrificial meats! Since you study longevity, you constantly face your wives, admiring the Li clan, all needing to rear children. But Li Er and Li Zong—every one took wives; Zhang Ling and Zhang Lu—generation after generation kept spouses. Thus you have the two titles of 'male officer' and 'female officer,' and the distinct appellations of 'Lineage Master' and 'Successor Master.' From the Wei and Jin onward, children were born in the abbeys; during the Chen and Liang, infants were nursed in the quiet chambers. Calling women the 'Crimson Gate' and men the 'Jade Pillar,' licentious desires and vulgar indecency originated from the Daoists! Externally feigning purity and emptiness, internally they are devoted to foul defilement—how utterly shameful! As the saying goes, 'Severe diseases require toxic medicine; it is proper to disembowel them and wash their intestines; grave crimes are curbed with strict penalties; their clans must be executed and their ancestral sacrifices extinguished.' But the gentlemen of this land have from the start received the truth of the Dao.
