The bodhisattva says: Laozi's scripture Zhongtai and others state: 'Lao Dan was yellow in colour, with a broad forehead, long ears, large eyes, sparse teeth, and thick lips; his hands grasped the lines of the character "ten" (十), and his feet trod upon the strokes of twice five (二五).' These were merely extraordinary marks among men, not the marvellous appearance of a sage. Biographies and records all state: 'Laozi had a prominent, thin nose, a pointed head, an elevated mouth, sparse teeth, squinting eyes, plucked ears, greyish-pear hair, thick lips, and long ears.' Such was his appearance; how could he compare to the Buddha? The Tathāgata's body was sixteen feet tall, upright and unbowed; his round halo of seven feet illuminated all dark realms; on his crown was an uṣṇīṣa, his hair dark blue; his ears hung down with lobes, and his gaze was clear and luminous; his cheeks were like a lion's, his seven places full and rounded; his mouth had forty teeth, square, white, and even; his tongue could cover his face, shaped like a lotus petal; inside and outside his hands were graspable, all palm lines complete; his speech was like thunder, possessing eight kinds of sounds; on his chest was a svastika, and on his feet were thousand-spoked wheels; his colour was that of molten purple-gold, with marks and signs hard to describe; he possessed thirty-two marks and eighty auspicious characteristics. Emitting a single ray of light, the hells ceased [their torment]; expounding a single Dharma, bitter agonies were brought to peace. These are fully set forth in the various sūtras, without need for detailed citation.
