The Bodhisattva said: Your Huahu jing says: '[Yin] Xi wished to follow Dan [Laozi]. Dan said: "If you are of utmost sincerity and wish to follow me, you must sever the heads of your seven family members—parents, wife, and children—and only then may you depart." Xi, in utmost sincerity, then severed the heads of his parents and family, seven persons in all. When he brought the heads before Dan, they transformed into seven pig heads.' Now, conforming to the Dao of heaven and earth is practice; not harming harmonious qi is filial piety. Ding Lan was moved to communicate through decayed wood; Dong Yong's filial piety summoned a heavenly maiden. Even birds and beasts have mothers and offspring that know affection. How much more so when Dan and Xi were practicing the Way in the world: how could severing one's parents' heads be called filial? How could slaying one's wife and children be considered compassion?
