There was a Yellow Turban [Daoist] named Li Zhongqing, whose learning fell short of pipe-peeping and whose knowledge was put to shame by [ordinary] measurement. Yet he boasted of his white-bird wings while gazing in fear at Mounts Song and Hua; bearing the mere flicker of a torch, he vied in brightness with the sun and moon. He then composed the 'Ten Differences' and 'Nine Delusions' to disparage and measure the Utmost Sage. I lamented his ignorance and pitied how harmless he thought his offence was. Therefore, I have briefly fashioned these Ten Analogies to enlighten him and Nine Admonitions to warn him, laying them out as clearly as pointing to one's palm. May noble gentlemen inspect their rationale here.
