The External Argument says: Since the day Lord Lao was born was unlike that of mortals, the time of his concealing his traces was certainly different from that of the world. Thus, heading west to the shifting sands, his journey passed through the Hangu Pass; his green ox departed the frontier, and purple mist floated in the sky. Neither his beginning nor his end can be fathomed, and no one knows his whereabouts. Śākya suffered a grievous illness at Śrāvastī and announced his demise in the Twin Groves; burning the coffin and cremating the corpse was merely following barbarian customs. His breath ended and his spirit departed, not differing in the least from ordinary mortals. This is the seventh difference, regarding departure from the world.
