Reaching the first year of Jingming of the Qi dynasty, on the sixteenth day of the eighth month, the Daoist master Chen Xianming received this scripture from Tang Chezi. The Zhihui siwei dingzhi jing (Scripture of Wisdom, Contemplation, and Establishing the Will) says: 'The Dharma Master delivers the ten precepts and five precepts'—these are the five precepts of the Buddhists. It also says: 'In the past, a number like the sands of the Ganges.' Question: If the Daoists previously had the ten precepts issuing from spontaneity, and Laozi was the teacher of emperors and kings generation after generation, then rulers of humans since ancient times should all have complied with and practiced them. Why has no transmission of this teaching been heard of until now? Moreover, foreign countries have eight great rivers: the first is the Ganges, and the second is the Sindhu; these rivers are vast, and their sands are limitless in number. The Buddha borrowed this as a metaphor, listing it fully in various sūtras. Now, when they speak of 'the sands of the Ganges', where does it come from? It is certain that they stole from Buddhist sūtras; the thief is now exposed! It also says: 'The one who delights in pure faith is my present body; the one of Dharma understanding is the True Person of the Left Mystery; the wife of the one of Dharma understanding is the True Person of the Right Mystery'—all altered from the Suvarṇaprabhāsa, Lotus, and other sūtras.
