The Vinaya of the Mahāsāṃghika and other texts state: The water jug made according to the Dharma has a narrow neck and a wide belly; it protects purity, is convenient and easy to use, gives rise to goodness, and promotes the Path, making it an essential utensil. Therefore, it was praised and instituted by the Buddha, and all disciples were ordered to keep one. Recently, I have seen Daoist masters also carrying this vessel. If they enjoy adopting the vessel of the Buddhist school, they must also receive and keep the bowl used by the saṃgha. Since they refuse to use the bowl, then in principle the water jug ought also to be discarded. According to the internal Dharma, the head monk at an upoṣadha meal, before receiving the food, first chants the benediction and proclaims the equal offering. These rules all derive from the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya and other texts. Recently, I have seen Daoist masters likewise chanting benedictions and proclaiming equal offerings. Daoism previously had no such texts; on what do they rely? 'Dān' is a sound from the Western Regions, which here was formerly translated as 'charity' (dāna). 'Pati' (yue) means to cross over (du). If one can practice charity, one will surely cross over birth and death; hence they are called dānapati (tanyue). An upāsikā is a pure and faithful woman. Recently, I have seen Daoist masters also addressing laypeople as dānapati and upāsikā. Based on which canonical texts do they make this address? I request that each school follow its own scriptures and establish distinct names. If the Daoist masters love this Buddhist Dharma and refuse to change it, then I also request that their word 'Dao' be changed to 'Bodhi'. If they consider it a Western sound and refuse to utter it, then the names 'dānapati' and 'upāsikā' must likewise not be called.
