The Dharmaguptaka-vinaya and various sūtras all state: White-robed laity pay homage to the saṃgha, and the saṃgha does not pay respect to the worldly. If one relies on the Daoist school, Laozi is the master; he called himself a subject and bowed to the sovereign. Recently, I have seen that Daoist masters do not bow to the ruler. Although this accords with the desires of the Daoist masters, it completely violates the teachings of Laozi. Craving personal advancement, they fail to realize they are straying from their tradition; seeking only self-fulfillment, how could they care about abandoning their doctrine? If they were to follow the rules of their original master, it would be appropriate for male Daoists to call themselves 'subjects' and female Daoist officials to call themselves 'handmaids'. On New Year's Day and the Winter Solstice, they should all hold court tablets, trail their slippers, and pay homage to the sovereign. This would then rectify the frivolous customs of the Daoist masters and restore the original teaching of Laozi.
