The pure-faith layman Dong Zongzhi under the Jin. Zongzhi was originally a fisherman in Hepu. Seeing a brilliant radiance at the bottom of the water, he went to fetch it and obtained a Buddha's halo. Emperor Wen had it fitted onto the back of the image, and it matched seamlessly. Because of this, [Zongzhi] felt shame and sincerity, abandoned evil, and turned toward goodness. Practicing the Way for the rest of his life, he personally copied the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra and chanted it through once each month, devoting his mind to this practice for some thirty years.
