今月十六日。人來獲贈筆語所喜道意清淨不事他緣。人生世間閑為第一。此事勿使俗眼見之。一二年來甚不喜聞也。思慮消盡無事可堪。古云。千里同風斯之謂矣所問賢弟不獨愚迷兼亦倒置。予為劇言。來諭如風過樹。秖益嘈嘈耳。病在膜內無由除之。足下雖有弟兄之情。柰何柰何。

On the sixteenth of this month, a visitor arrived and I received the gift of your written words. What pleases me is that your mind on the Way is pure and you do not busy yourself with other conditions. For a person living in this world, leisure is paramount; do not let worldly eyes see this matter. For the past year or two, I have been very displeased to hear of such things. When thoughts are completely eliminated, there is nothing that can be endured. As the ancients said, 'Sharing the same wind across a thousand leagues' refers to this. As for what you asked about your worthy younger brother: he is not only foolish and confused, but also inverted. I spoke harsh words to him, but your instructions to him were like the wind passing through trees, only adding to the clamor. The disease is beneath the membrane, and there is no way to remove it. Though you have fraternal affection, what can be done, what can be done?
