The northern veranda where Metropolitan Monk Rector Cihua resided was the innermost retreat of the hermitage, and among all its windows, the most airy and luminous. In stillness one could find peace; in rest one could find repose. It so happened that Cihua was delighted with it and wished Qianzi to give it a name and erect a sign. Qianzi said to Cihua: 'Master Liaoxing, all people have things they enjoy, but your enjoyment delights in being close to the Way; is this not almost consummate? Stillness is rectitude; luminosity is reflection; emptiness is containment; and that attained in deep seclusion is purity. Even in a room of ten square feet surrounded by earthen walls, when the supreme Way is present, its pure breeze and vast spirit illuminate heaven and earth and penetrate antiquity and the present, wondrously present in the human world yet standing out aloft and profound, not necessarily confined to green mountains and white clouds; vast and boundless, not necessarily situated beyond the world and outside the realm. Since your enjoyment already possesses the inclination toward the supreme Way, Qianzi has named your northern veranda
