In one pavilion resounds the bell, / In the other pavilion stands the image. / The image rectifies your vision, / The bell stimulates your hearing. / Only through seeing and hearing / Is your nature rectified. / Do not say the Dao is far away: / It lies within a single blink. / Do not say the Sage is far away: / It lies in this stirring of yours. / The pavilions and the trees / Are where my purpose lodges. / The bell and the image / Are your spiritual encouragement. / Oh, you students, / You should know your master's intent! / Be prudent with your seeing and hearing, / Do not say this was done in vain.
