Fish and fowl are teeming, / Governed by dragon and phoenix. / The dragon cannot remain hidden, / The phoenix cannot decline. / Human relations are orderly, / Maintained by sages and worthies. / The sage cannot be lost, / The worthy cannot be diminished. / The man of ripe maturity / Has already passed away with the transformation! / Although his exemplary model remains, / How can it be observed up close? / The great night suddenly turns to dusk; / When will dawn come again? / Once the divine spirit departs, / How can the vast stillness know? / His morality is bequeathed to the world, / Longed for by the hearts of the multitude. / Passing down purity and integrity to the family, / A teacher for generation after generation. / The five blessings are valued in their entirety; / The Duke obtained them here. / His natural endowment was uniquely fine; / Who could be his equal? / The human lifespan is a hundred years; / The Duke nearly reached the term. / Filial sons and obedient grandsons, / Why must you add to your grief? / That which brings me sorrow / Is that worthy men grow ever fewer. / Pure sincerity is not carried on, / The Way of the gentleman wanes. / The ten thousand kinds are in turmoil, / Heterodoxy and orthodoxy dispute each other. / Standing aloof and acting independently, / If not upon you, upon whom could one rely? / The autumn wind soughs, / The white dew falls thick. / Plants and trees wither and shed, / The burial mound rises lofty. / The spirit carriage departs alone, / Red banners flutter and fly. / Looking upon this parting, / A vast and everlasting farewell!
