16.14

韓子讀墨謂。孔子必用墨子。墨子必用孔子。不相用不足為孔墨。及與孟簡書。乃曰。二帝三王群聖之道大壞。後之學者無所尋逐。以至於今泯泯也。其禍出於楊墨肆行而莫之禁故也。韓子何其言之反覆如此。惑人而無準也。

When Master Han read Mozi, he stated that Confucius would certainly have employed Mozi and Mozi would certainly have employed Confucius; not employing each other would be insufficient to be Confucius or Mozi. Yet in his letter to Minister Meng Jian, he said: 'The Dao of the two emperors, the three kings, and the host of sages has been greatly ruined; later scholars have had nothing to pursue, falling into obscurity down to the present day. The disaster arose because Yang [Zhu] and Mo [Di] ran unchecked with no one to restrain them.' How could Master Han's words be so self-contradictory? It misleads people without providing any standard.
