16.28

韓子上于頔書。稱頔若有聖賢之言行。乃曰。信乎其有德且有言也。乃引楊子雲言曰。商書灝灝爾。周書噩噩爾。信乎其能灝灝而且噩噩也。然與頔列傳相反。不亦諛乎。

Master Han presented a letter to Yu Di in which he praised Di as if he possessed the words and conduct of sages and worthies, saying: 'Truly, he has both virtue and eloquent words!' He then quoted Yang Ziyun's words: 'The Shang Book is vast and expansive; the Zhou Book is solemn and awe-inspiring. Truly, he is able to be vast and expansive, as well as solemn and awe-inspiring.' Yet this contradicts Di's biography [in the dynastic history]; was this not sycophancy?
