Venerable Zhou's literary works are clear and elegant; / The talent Heaven bestowed on him cannot be rivaled. / Monks practicing literature have existed since antiquity, / But for preeminence, one must honor Zhou as the first. / Though creation alters, the spirit does not shift; / When Venerable Zhou composed poetry, his mind was just the same. / Above, he straddled the Sao and the Ya; below, he surpassed Shen and Song; / With free and bold thoughts running wild, his Way was fully complete. / How could the Chan master’s cultivation of literature have been in vain? / It guided human minds to penetrate Buddhist principles. / Gentlemen of the court, like Duke Lu and his peers, / Early on joined his pure excursions, admiring what lay beyond the mundane. / Though this man has passed away, these words remain; / Defending the Dharma, they surely shall endure for ten thousand generations.
