Since the Master's renown in the Way and virtuous fame were so surpassing, students of later generations, as well as those in office at the time who assisted the sovereign in the Way and served as exemplars to the realm and posterity, all looked up to him and admired him as clouds in heaven and the sun and stars. Therefore, some sought his lingering style, longed for his distant traces, and gazed upon and praised him without end. Such works include, as recorded previously, Chan Master Jingyin Dajue Lian's 'Song of the White Clouds' sending off the Master; Hong Juefan of Jiangxi's poem paying homage to the Master's bone pagoda; Duan Jieran of Mount Laṅkā in the South Seas' ancient-style poem of a full hundred rhymes mourning the Master; Chan Master Jing, who resided at Mount Tianzhu in Longshu of Western Shu's poem of distant admiration together with its preface and encomium; and Chan Master Lingyuan Weiqing's colophon poem on two letters offering his praise. All are now recorded here, some in detail and some abridged, to provide for study and perusal, and to inspire the aspirations and conduct of those who study the Buddha in the final age. The 'Song of the White Clouds' by Chan Master Jingyin Dajue Lian sending off the Master has already appeared in the preceding postface, so it is not redundantly recorded here.
