Among what is honored, nothing is more honored than the Way; among what is beautiful, nothing is more beautiful than virtue. Where the Way and virtue reside, though one be an ordinary man, one is not impoverished; where the Way and virtue do not reside, though one rule as king over all under Heaven, one does not succeed. Bo Yi and Shu Qi were starving men of the past, yet today when people are compared to them, they are pleased; Jie, Zhou, You, and Li were rulers of people in the past, yet today when people are compared to them, they are enraged. For this reason, the great person worries that the Way and virtue may not fill their own person, but does not worry that power and position do not belong to them.
