The above-named [Qisong] states: Now, having by chance undeservedly met with this grand appointment owing to a hollow reputation, I share in the grand promotion of the prefecture and head the foremost ranks of the Chan assembly. Examining my foolishness and ignorance, I truly consider it an undeserved assumption. This is surely because you, honorable gentlemen, minding the decline of the sacred Dharma and giving primacy to refined righteousness, have generously selected my meager talents and allowed me to join this great office, choosing to preserve superior virtue and making the power of the Dao fully flourish. Though being drawn upward has its reason, I am ashamed of being promoted without merit. My hastening to pay respects will not be far off, but my praise and appreciation cannot be fully expressed. I have respectfully dispatched a monk in advance to rush this memorial, to disclose my humble sincerity and further offer my high thanks.
