Venerable Che's purity was like ice and snow; / An eminent monk's natural endowment is distinct from other men. / At thirty he could write verse, his fame already manifest; / His name ranked among poets, while his mind dwelt in the Vinaya. / No different from Huiyuan, yet different from Huixiu; / When Jiaoran had not yet joined him, who could be his peer? / As wandering white clouds, where had he any fixed abode? / Suddenly he entered the Guanzhong region to visit Bao and Li. / Solitary purity is hard to sustain, thwarted by the crowd; / In the end he was blameless, though struck by false rumors. / The tree that stands tall in the forest is surely broken by the wind; / Venerable Che's harbored virtue became the seed of calamity. / The ancients have already gone, no longer to be lamented; / For you I compose this verse, bequeathing it to those who come after.
