Examining these ultimate words, they may serve as a mirror and guide. According to Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna's Dazhidu lun, when the Tathāgata's śarīra are about to conclude their salvation of beings, they transform into the cintāmaṇi of a cakravartin, still bringing great benefit to all living beings. Thus, their true spiritual power never ceases, and their blessing of the world is boundless! Today, the Son of Heaven does not forget the words of entrustment and ever maintains the intention of external protection. Devotedly believing in the Buddhist principles, he wavers not for a breath. Whenever halls and palaces are newly completed, he invariably summons monks to burn [incense] and preach; when the new capital was just established, he first founded this pagoda. Relying on the blessed protection of the Buddha's power, he hopes that the precious imperial reign will endure forever, preserving the flourishing prosperity of the great undertaking and enjoying heavenly blessings for distant ages. Fearing that mounds may shift and valleys change, and dreading that the grand achievements might not be transmitted, why did he decree a lowly monk to elucidate this Way? My talent is not that of [Chen] Lin or [Zhi]yuan; my learning falls short of [Dao]sheng and [Seng]rong. Exerting my efforts to wield the writing brush, I lack the eight characters of Cao E; exhausting my feelings to express my thoughts, I wear out the five spirits of Yang Xiong. Revered by our Emperor's mind to magnify and praise, and delighting in the beauty of the śarīra's renewed radiance, dancing with hands and feet, I respectfully append these inscribed words: / Golden clouds hang down, jade petals are fragrant. / Wondrous is the bhadrakalpa, where a thousand Buddhas manifest auspicious signs! / The sacred ancestor, Śākyamuni, was the fourth to appear in the world; / Clouds arose in the Tuṣita Heaven, wind soared over Kapilavastu. / Devas held precious canopies, dragons spat forth a golden basin. / Walking alone to the east and west, proclaimed the most venerable above and below. / The Way was achieved in Magadha, wisdom fulfilled at the bodhimaṇḍa. / A blue lotus emerging from water, a bright moon soaring in light. / His voice pervaded the dust-mote worlds, his Dharma enveloped worlds numerous as the sands. / Transforming through non-action, converging without words. / Splitting open the sūtra within a speck of dust, pointing to the jewel inside the robe. / The lost know their return, the foolish cherish the Way. / The teachings established the triyāna, originally for the one reality. / The great matter complete, his spirit returned to eternal quiescence. / Perfumed and cultivated with morality and concentration, his śarīra were widely dispersed. / Blessing and protecting humans and devas, grace moistening animals and plants. / First flourishing in Western India, later spreading to the Eastern realms. / In dragon palaces and imperial courts, worship and offerings never cease. / Senghui moved the numinous, first establishing [a pagoda] in the land of Wu; / The Wei empress's sincere devotion greatly opened Yongning. / Reverently contemplating our Emperor, who lovingly cherishes the correct path, / A rampart to the Buddhist gate, an assistant to the Dharma jewel. / He built this golden citadel and constructed this jade pagoda. / Jade of Chu circles around, stone of Yan surrounds. / Interwoven pearl nets, interlaced splendid tassels. / Light shines in the imperial park, a magnificent spectacle for the royal city. / Eaves incline toward distant peaks, doorways reflect tall groves. / Pine winds whisper, the cassia-moon sinks low. / Zhiyuan unites the era; the sacred intent is hard to fathom. / Only when it appeared within the pagoda was its auspiciousness seen. / Indeed, this divine creation blesses our imperial dwelling, / Enduring as long as heaven, never changing for ten thousand ages.
