1.18

或者又徒見道家有化胡經。謂釋迦文殊。乃老子尹喜所化也。佛家有破邪論。謂佛遣三弟子震旦教化。孔子乃儒童菩薩。顏回乃淨光菩薩。老子乃摩訶迦葉也。審如此則三教優劣。豈易以立談叛哉。殊不知。二書之作。各欲尊己而抑彼。遂至於駕空而失實。

Others merely see that Daoism has the Scripture of Converting the Barbarians (Huahu jing), claiming that Śākya and Mañjuśrī were transformed by Laozi and Yin Xi; and that Buddhism has the Treatise Refuting Heterodoxy (Poxie lun), claiming that the Buddha dispatched three disciples to convert Cīnasthāna, where Confucius was Bodhisattva Māṇava, Yan Hui was Bodhisattva Viśuddhaprabha, and Laozi was Mahākāśyapa. If it were truly thus, how could the superiority and inferiority of the Three Teachings be decided in an instant's discussion? Little do they realize that the authors of both books each wished to exalt themselves and belittle the other, thereby constructing fabrications that departed from reality.
